Huna

I hope that you have read the books by Max Freedom Long on Hawaiian Magick or Huna. I highly recommend them to all Craft members. I grieve to see his wonderful work neglected.
~ Victor Anderson

Huna is a psycho-spiritual system developed from traditional Hawaiian concepts by Max Freedom Long (a non-Hawaiian).

Victor Anderson knew Max Freedom Long, and he was a member of Long's Huna research organization (founded in 1945). Huna bears some similarities to the Andersons' teachings, particularly in relation to the triune nature of the human soul.

Victor Anderson disagreed with Long on many points; he also had other sources for his understanding of Hawaiian lore.

Familiarity with Huna can still be beneficial, however, to later study in Anderson Feri. Huna is also worth studying as an end in itself.

Shared terms for related concepts in Huna and Feri:

Aumakua
higher*or divine self
Uhane
middle* or talking self
Unihipili
lower* or vital self
Mana
basic life energy
Aka
etheric substance
Pendulum
psychic communication tool
Kala
cleansing ritual
Ha Prayer
method for effective prayer

* Refers to the relative location of the physical focus for this part of the soul.

Original Huna can sometimes be hard to distinguish among its many imitators —particularly online.

We recommend the off-site Huna links below:

Huna is not really complicated once the initial concepts are grasped.

It does, however, require a commitment to the process. Huna ideas will remain dry and dusty words until they are both understood and practiced.

The following books provide a good introduction:
